Allen T. Smith, Jr., DDS, died peacefully at his home on May 24th in Delray Beach, Florida. Dr. Smith ("Papa") was surrounded by his loving family in his final days. His brilliant mind, generous heart, and gentle spirit will be forever missed by all that knew him.

Dr. Smith was born on November 21, 1923 in Springfield Illinois. He was the son of Allen T. Smith, Sr. and Mary Ward Whitlock Smith. He practiced dentistry in Springfield from 1946 until his retirement to Delray Beach in 1985. In Springfield he was a past president of the G.V. Black District Dental Society, a past director and president of the Sangamo Club, and a member of Illini Country Club.

Dr. Smith was a past director of International Holding Corp. and Investor's Security Life Insurance Co. in Chicago, Illinois, a past director of Coastal Security Life Insurance Co. of Los Angeles, California, and a past director of General Corporation of Ohio, and of General Life Insurance Co., both of Cleveland, Ohio, and a director of Andrew Jackson Life Insurance Co. of West Virginia. In Florida, Dr. Smith was a member of Pine Tree Golf Club in Boynton Beach, and of the Little Club in Gulf Stream.

He was preceded in death by his wife Helen Nuess Smith, a brother, Ward W. Smith, and by his parents. He is survived by two daughters, Sally Smith Nold of Western Springs, Illinois, and Nancy Smith Gillespie of Winfield, Illinois, a son Allen Thomas Smith III (Janie) of New Canaan, Connecticut, and by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A private burial service for both Dr. and Mrs. Smith will be held at Oak Ridge cemetery in Springfield in August.
