Billy Newberry, 75, of Cape Coral, Florida, passed away on July 20, 2026, leaving behind a family who loved him deeply and a community that was better for knowing him. 

Born and raised in Arlington, Georgia, Billy grew up on a farm under the care of his parents, Billy and Maggie Newberry. That small-town, southern upbringing never left him — it shaped the calm, good-natured man his family and friends came to cherish. Whether you knew him well or had just met him, you were likely charmed by his easy southern drawl and quick sense of humor before the conversation was over.

Billy went on to earn dual degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management from Georgia Tech, a school he would cheer for with unwavering loyalty for the rest of his life. He built a distinguished career at Florida Power & Light, where he spent more than 30 years before retiring. In retirement, he found his greatest joys close to home — in the bleachers at grandkids' sports games, in the front row of school plays, at ceremonies, and at what felt like an endless and beloved parade of birthday parties.

He married Joanie Schaeffer (Sabolek) in 1977, and together they raised their four children in Cape Coral. A passionate sports fan, he cheered for his Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, the Atlanta Braves, and the Jacksonville Jaguars with equal enthusiasm and loyalty. Those who knew him best could also picture him exactly as he was, meeting friends for a long breakfast, or floating on a pool raft with a Bloody Mary in hand, and a Florida Lottery ticket worth dreaming about nearby. He had a gift for finding the simple pleasures in life and savoring every one of them.

Billy is survived by his son, Matt Newberry, daughter-in-law Adria Newberry, and their children Ophelia and Hollis; his daughter Emily Newberry, son-in-law Adam Frazier, and their children Anna, Elizabeth, and Ivy; his daughter Ashley Newberry; his daughter Elise Newberry, son-in-law Brad Gillan, and their children Bobby, Alina, and Alexandra; and his sisters Charlotte Williams, Linda Dowdy, Maxine Rithmire, and his twin Barbara (Babs) McLeod, and many nieces and nephews.
