Obituary

Charles Thomas Cunneen was born in Brooklyn, NY on January 13, 1928. He was known affectionately as Charlie or "Uncle Charlie" by many family and friends. He was raised in the Brooklyn Naval Yard neighborhood. He came from a very devout Catholic family and attended Catholic schools.

Charles was predeceased by his parents Michael and Lillian and his sister Mary Montgomery, brother Francis (Buddy) and sister Gladys McWIlliams. Charles was also predeceased by his loving wife of 65 years, Mary and leaves behind his devoted children Kevin Cunneen (Peggy), Terry Reilly (Brian), Ellen Gordon (Fabian) and Maureen Moffatt. Charles also has 11 devoted grandchildren: Gregory Gibbons (Stephanie), Timothy Gibbons (Megan), Patrick Cunneen, Brendan Cunneen, Patrick Reilly, Connor Reilly, Christopher Gordon, Cara Gordon, Cassidy Gordon, Bridget Moffatt and Peter Moffatt. Charles had 3 great grandchildren who are JR, Dominic Gibbons, and Blake Gibbons. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Charles was in the Army as a paratrooper in Japan in the 11th Airborne Division. He was the Chaplain assistant during his time in the service. Charles started as a mail clerk at 19 years old for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company where he worked for 42 years and retired as Senior VP in charge of Public Relations, Advertising, Company Property and Services and Housing Divisions. He was responsible for bringing the Snoopy advertising campaign to the organization which was the longest campaign in the company history. He also shortened the company name to MetLife, and brought in the MetLife Blimp. Charles was highly admired for the way he treated all his employees with respect and fairness.

Charles loved participating in sports and was proud to be a "jock". He enjoyed playing basketball, softball, bowling and golf. His team won the basketball championship in their division in the Army and he was inducted in the MetLife Hall of Fame for basketball. He was captain of his bowling team and President of the Bowling League. He thoroughly enjoyed playing golf which greatly improved upon his retirement.

Charles was a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, member of Ancient Order of Hibernians, Vice President of the Holy Name Society and also a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre with Star. He was very active in his parishes as Lecter and Religious Education teacher.  He also served on governing committees and boards during his lifetime.

Charles was an amazing storyteller and loved to listen to music and sing. His love for his family and friends will never be forgotten. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him dearly.
