Calnan
September 23, 1927 – August 11, 2022
It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Donald G. Calnan, of Boynton Beach Fla, formerly from South River, NJ, a b eloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and uncle , on Thursday, August 11, 2022, at the age of 94.
Don was born in Boston, Massachusetts on September 23, 1927, to the late Augustine Calnan and Mary Ellen (Callahan) Calnan. He was predeceased in death by his siblings, Dr. Arthur Calnan, Marian Calnan Pryor and LCDR (r) Miriam Calnan.
Don was drafted during World War II, where he served as a member of the Army's Second Indian Head Division. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Don graduated from Northeastern University, with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked for Western Electric for 34 years. Upon his retirement, he became a judge's clerk in the Middlesex County Court System.
Don was an active member of the church community, serving as an usher at both Corpus Christi Church in South River, NJ, and at Saint Thomas More Church in Boynton Beach. FL for more than 50 years. In addition, he was very active in the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, serving as both The Exalted Ruler and Trustee.
Don and his wife moved to Boynton Beach in 2004 and enjoyed retirement life. They loved travelling, whether it be by trains, planes, automobiles, or cruise ships. Their travels included North and South America, Europe, and Australia. When Don wasn't travelling, he was an avid bowler and bocce player.
Don is survived by his wife of 71 years, Margaret (McKay), and daughters Eileen (Donald Jr.) Pierson, Sandra (William) Dillon, and Brenda (Joseph) Farkas and his two rescue dogs, Fiona, and Shamus. Additionally, he is survived by his grandchildren Heather (Stephen) Milek, Donald (Dana) Pierson III, LCDR Megan (LCDR David - U.S.N.R ) Piotrowski, Amanda Pierson, LCDR Christopher Farkas, Allison (Christopher) Kemsley, and Greg (Vanessa) Dillon, and 6 great-grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by 13 nieces and nephews and their respective families.
The family would like to thank two special ladies, Carol and Asuela, for their exceptional care and kindness towards Don throughout these past months.
The funeral service and viewing will be held at Boynton Memorial Chapel (800 Boynton Beach Blvd, Boynton Beach, FL 33426). The viewing will be on Monday, August 29th from 2-6 p.m. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 30th at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, (10935 S Military Trail, Boynton Beach, FL 33436) followed by internment at the South Florida National Cemetery, (6501 FL-7, Lake Worth, FL 33449)
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations in memory of Don to be made to either the USO ( https://www.uso.org/donate/donate-in-honor ) or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital ( https://www.stjude.org/donate/donate-to-st-jude.html )
