Dorothy Evelyn Doud Wellington died peacefully in her sleep at her home in
Boynton Beach, FL. in the early hours of July 17. She had lived a good and
interesting life for 105 years and was ready to move on to her eternal home.
She was born December 23, 1903 in North Bangor, NY the oldest of six
children of Alice Plumb Doud and Henry I. Doud, granddaughter of Clarence
and Ella Day Doud of Chateaugay, NY and George and Agnes Plumb of North Bangor.
Both sides were descendants of early pioneers of the Northern New York
border. She attended Malone, NY public schools and was graduated with the class of
1922 from Franklin Academy. She attended Simmons College in Boston and was
graduated from Wheaton College in Illinois with the class of 1927. She was
employed for six years by the school system of Mount Vernon, NY.
On September 2, 1933 she married Frederic L. Wellington of Rochester, NY, at
that time Boy Scout Executive of the Adirondack Council in Malone.
Subsequently they lived in Manchester NH, Wilmington DE and Rochester NY.
Mr. Wellington remained Chief Scout Executive in Rochester for over 20 years
until his retirement. Mr. Wellington died in 1970. In Rochester, Mrs. Wellington was active in Garden Club and gave demonstrations in flower arranging and corsage making. She also volunteered at the Rochester State Hospital. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Irondequoit, acting as officer in several of the church organizations. She became a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Boynton Beach, FL.
Mrs. Wellington held membership in two patriotic organizations; the Society
of Mayflower Descendants and Daughters of the Founders and Patriots. She
was a member of the Malone Monday Duplicate Club. After 1967, Mrs. Wellington spent the winter months in Florida and the summer months in Malone and at Chateaugay Lake, NY. In 1971 Mrs. Wellington became a permanent resident of Boynton Beach. She enjoyed numerous trips abroad in her later years. England was her favorite country to visit.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Lois Wellington Harden of
Fredericksburg, VA, a son, Roger Wellington of Greenville, SC and a grandson, John Harden of Reva, VA. An infant daughter, Linda Wellington and a grandson, Kenneth
Harden preceded her in death. Other survivors include sisters Lucia Emily Wallace and her husband, Edmund Wallace of Willsboro, NY and sister Marjorie Doud Ives of Meriden, CT as well as nieces and nephews and great and great-great nieces and nephews. Plans for a service at graveside in Riverside Cemetery in Rochester, NY will
be announced at a future date.
