IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Douglas L.
Currie
September 21, 1945 – July 23, 2021
Father -Donald Morse Currie Born 1905 Died 1957
Mother-Marion Helen Leggett Born 1914 Died 2014
Douglas Leggett Currie Born 9/21/1945 Died 7/23/2021
Doug was born in White Plains N.Y. He survived a life threatening first
year of his life after suffering from nephrosis. He grew up in the
Greenville school system in Scarsdale, N.Y. He then attended Darrow
School in New Lebanon, N.Y. He was co-captain of the football team and
graduated in 1964.
Doug attended Denison University and also CASA (college art study
abroad) in Paris, as part of his studies. He was the prime mover in
founding the Denison Rugby Club in 1967 which still survives and
thrives. In 1968 Doug survived a disabling car wreck near
Albuqurque,N.M. The accident resulted in left hemipelesia ( a severe
limp and limited use of his left hand).
In the years following, he manged to live independently and pursued his
interest in art. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The
School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1976. For many years he
assisted Earl Mahon an instructor at The Art Students League .
Over the past five or six years Doug became dependent on an electric
wheel chair and decided to move to an assisted care facility in Florida
to avoid snow and mobility issues.
In March Doug had moved into Abbey Delray in Delray Beach, Fl., and was
living in good health until mid- July when he complained of a bad cough.
He had received both his Covid shots in February, and tested negative.
On Friday, 7/23,he was discovered to have low blood oxygen and a
lowering pulse. He was taken to Delray Medical Center for CPR . He was
pronounced dead of cardiac arrest early that morning. This was all a
complete surprise to family.
Those who knew him who read this will remember a fine caring man who
"got the Joke". His art was his salvation. He was generously kind and
never short of an enthusiastic humorous observation.
The surprise of his passing is only matched by his graceful and fearless
mastery of some tough circumstances He is still an inspiration.
Doug was a Christian. For those of you of such a mind say a prayer for him.
Doug is survived by his sister-in-law, Martha and his brother, Charles.
There will not be a funeral but there will be an informal memorial in
Florida this fall/winter.
