Obituary

Ernest James Barry, a lifelong educator and World War II veteran, passed away January 17, 2017. Ernie was known by the name of Pop-Pop to many who loved him. Ernie was born and raised in Nashua, NH, the youngest of fourteen children of Frank and Lavina (Lavoie) Barry. As a young man, Ernie was drafted into the Army and served in the World War II European front from 1943-1946. Ernie was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and Penn State University where he studied romance languages; becoming fluent in Spanish, German, French and Italian. From 1955 to 1983, Ernie's love for languages led him to a teaching position at Lake Forest Academy, a private boarding school in Lake Forest, Illinois. There, he taught Spanish and later French along with being heavily involved in track & field athletics and departmental leadership. Ernie was so loved by the faculty and students at Lake Forest Academy, that he was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1985. Ernie had many passions and hobbies, specifically cross country skiing, photography and Jazz music. Ernie was happily married to Lillian Vokes for 34 years. Ernie was always happy and was never short on stories to tell, wisdom and lessons to pass down to his family. He leaves behind two loving step-daughters, four grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, 18 nieces and nephews and a multitude of other family members and friends. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Trustbridge Hospice, 5300 East Ave. West Palm Beach, FL. 33407.
