Mr. Ryan, 84, of Boynton Beach, FL, and Rye, NY, died May 19, 2010, at his home in Florida. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Blanche D. Ryan; seven children, Dr. George G., Jr., (Dr. Madeleine Bedard), Constance R. Alesse (Mark), Hope C. Ryan, Stephen J. (Mary Broderick), Peter J. (Mary Curtin), Kathleen R. LiCastri (Philip), and Ellen P. Ryan (Dr. Randall Mason); his sister, Geraldine Ryan Purcell (James); and 15 grandchildren. A son, David D., predeceased Mr. Ryan.
George graduated from Iona Prep. He served in the U.S. Army and Navy before entering Georgetown University and completing an accelerated college curriculum in 1949. Upon graduation, he joined the family insurance company, C.W. Ryan & Co. as an insurance broker and retired as its president in 1985.
He was an avid sportsman: high school track team, hunting and fishing, handball, paddle tennis, and, in retirement, golf was his favorite. He earned a certification in scuba diving as well as a pilot's license for small aircraft. George and Blanche also enjoyed many adventures in their travels throughout the world.
He was an inspiration to his family and friends in his battle with Parkinson's disease for 16 years. His courage, love of family and friends, his keen sense of humor, and vision of the future with his many NYSE transactions will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Funeral services will be held in Rye, NY. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation or Hospice by the Sea, Boca Raton, would be appreciated.
