Helen Nuess Smith

Helen Nuess Smith died on Tuesday, June 24, 2008, in Delray Beach, Florida after a valiant fifteen-year battle against cancer. Mrs. Smith was born on November 23, 1924 in Springfield, Illinois, the daughter of Carl and Pearl Nuess. She married Allen T. Smith in Springfield on September 13, 1947. She resided in Springfield until 1985 when she and her husband retired to Delray Beach, Florida. Mrs. Smith was a devoted wife mother and grandmother whose graciousness and kindness was extended to all that knew her. In Springfield she was a member of the Junior League, the Margaret Garfield Chapter of the King's Daughters Association, the Illini Country Club, and the Sangamo Club. In Florida she was a member of the Little Club in Gulf Stream and a member of Pine Tree Golf Club in Boynton Beach. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by three sisters, Ruth Nuess Irwin, Jane Nuess, and Nancy Nuess O'Keefe. She is survived by her husband Allen T. Smith, her two daughters Sally Smith Nold of Western Springs, Illinois, Nancy Smith Gillespie of Wheaton, Illinois, by her son A. Thomas Smith III of New Canaan, Connecticut and by four granddaughters and two grandsons. There will be no visitation. A private memorial service will be held in Florida and a burial service will be held in Springfield, Illinois at a later date.
