Helene Ann (Mangan) Barrows of Boynton Beach, FL, passed away suddenly at Delray Medical Center, Delray Beach, FL, on Tuesday, March 12, 2013. She was 75 years old. Helene was the only child of the late Joseph W. and Helen (Lazewick) Mangan, formerly of Somerville, MA. Helene was born on July 21, 1937 in Somerville, MA. During her youth she attended Saint Clement School and was a graduate of the Somerville High School Class of 1955 where she enjoyed membership in the National Honor Society. After graduation, Helene was employed at New England Telephone as a mobile marine telephone operator during a time when wireless communication was a luxury afforded to very few. She was fond of telling the story about the time she put a commercial airplane on hold and it flew out of communication range. Helene enjoyed homemaking, cooking, and doting on her children and grandchildren. She developed an affection for luxury cars, beginning with her beloved Packard, which was a high school graduation present from her father. Helene was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Edward L. Barrows. She is survived by her three children; Peter Edward and his wife Cindy, of Harwich Port, MA, Michael Joseph and his wife, Leslie, of Newton, MA, and Susan Ann Smith and her husband, Scott, of Easton, MA. She is also survived by five grandchildren; Glenn Ann Barrows, of Bridgewater, MA, Joelle Elizabeth Barrows, of Hyannis, MA, Curtis Scott and Jillian Ann Smith, of Easton, MA, and Sara Ann Barrows, of Newton, MA. A memorial service will be held Friday, March 15, 2013 at 10:00 AM at Holy Cross Church, 225 Purchase Street, South Easton, MA 02375-1605. A private burial service will be held at a later date.
