IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Herbert Allen
Weintraub
November 2, 1934 – August 13, 2019
Herbert Weintraub was born on November 2, 1934, to Leon and Gertrude Weintraub. One of his earliest memories was of flying pigeons with his father atop the roof of their Bronx NY apartment - an experience that he truly enjoyed. His family which included his sisters, Mildred and Carol, would later move to a house in the Throgsneck area of the Bronx on Logan Ave. In his youth, Herb's favorite pastimes were playing stickball with his friends and drawing pictures. Those two things would carry through his life with his love for baseball and a future career as a professional artist.
He met his love Patricia Carey, in Bronx NY on Valentines Day in 1953, when she was 15 and he was 17 years old. They went steady, attended Patricia's prom and dreamt of a future together. That part of his story would have to wait as he would serve in the US Army for the following two years during the conflict in Korea. His experience during his service was not long but very memorable. He collected wonderful stories to share with everyone on the antics of his fellow servicemen. When his service was complete, he disembarked a ship from Germany to NY with another of his fellow servicemen. Waiting impatiently on the dock was his Patricia and her mother. The sound of whistling, hooting and hollering servicemen filled the air as he gave his love a long-awaited kiss!
The wedding date was soon set. They were married on January 26, 1957...62 years ago. They began building their family a year later giving birth to their first daughter Patricia, soon followed by Steven, Peter, Lorraine, Evelyn, and Virginia. The GI bill enabled Herb to attend school at the prestigious School Of Visual Arts in New York City and hone his God-given talent for painting that had existed since he was a child.
After completing school, he began working for the US postal service as a mail sorter. With the help of his wife, he would begin to take some chances with his art career. He landed cover work with the highly influential news magazine "The Reporter" and, as the story goes, sorted the very magazine of which his art was on the cover. That was a sure sign he needed to move on a career in art. Art shows would prove a very successful vehicle to introduce his paintings to the public. His work resonated with young and old collectors and proved that he can focus completely on creating art for a living.
Herbert provided for his family with his paintbrush and talent that would have him remembered by thousands. His honesty, integrity, compassion, and positivity will continue to be an example for all that knew him.
Between his love for baseball, his great puns and one-liners, his friendship with lizards, and his ability to shoot the wings off of a fly in mid-flight with a rubber band... Above his gravity-defying paper airplanes that spiraled back to you, his memorable travel songs, and his love for westerns and Sinatra... Even more than his AMAZING talent as an artist - he will be remembered for his deep love for his wife Patricia. To his children - Patricia, Steven, Peter, Lorraine, Evelyn, and Virginia - his grandchildren - Eric, Holly, Brad, Randy, Jared, Benjamin, and Harry - and his great-grandchildren - Adelaide, Juliet, and Jake, he will be remembered for his sensitivity, his stoicism, and his incredible, overwhelming capacity for love. He was a wonderful Dad and a loving Husband. He will be very missed.
