James F. Mooney, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, son, and friend passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on April 3, 2022, at the age of 91.
James was born on August 8, 1930, in New York City to William and Helen Mooney. He grew up playing stickball, going to sporting events, and enjoying life alongside his incredible group of lifelong friends. Jim was a diehard Yankees, Notre Dame, University of Miami, Giants, and Frank Sinatra fan.
On December 29th, 1951 he married the love of his life, Joan Cotil and they had six children. James worked tirelessly to provide for his family. He retired as a proud NYPD Captain after serving 34 years. The police department was the cornerstone of his life. He was a pioneer in the tech world as he led the NYPD into the digital world. In the evenings, he worked a second job doing computer work for a NY insurance company. He always said computers were the future and as usual, he was right. Jim came from an era where work was an expression of his honor, for his family and his country. James served in the Army during the Korean War and loved America, for the opportunities it holds, and for all it stands for. Jim was also a devout Catholic. He loved attending mass every Sunday and sent all of his children through Catholic school.
After he retired, he and Joan moved from Orangeburg, NY to his dream home in Boynton Beach, Florida. James loved to vacation with family and friends. Throughout their lives, Jim and his wife went on over 35 cruises, from the Caribbean to Europe. He enjoyed taking his family every summer on vacations to the policeman's camp and later Beach Haven in Long Beach Island, NJ. Some of his favorite moments were spent at the beach with his family or at the countless football games with his sons.
During his retirement years, he was a member of the Palm Beach 10-13 Club, including managing their newsletter for 20 years.
James was loved beyond measure and will be missed always. He lived his life sacrificing for all those he loved. His life was an example of greatness, fairness, and generosity to all who knew him.
