Obituary

Jack was born in Philadelphia, PA on April 3rd, 1938 the second of four children to Walt and Kitty MacFadyen. He left this Earth to carry on his work on February 3rd, 2024.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Jack was educated at St Joseph's Prep and St Joseph's College. The Jesuit foundation stayed with him throughout his life and provided a framework for the way he lived and treated others. As a lifelong learner he also attended Duquesne University and earned a Paralegal Certification. He worked in the commercial insurance business his entire career.

He married Anne (HInes) in 1964 and moved to Pittsburgh where they raised three children, JP, Elizabeth and Peter. He deeply loved his eight grandchildren who were his pride and joy.

A dedicated volunteer throughout his life, Jack served with the Thomas Merton Center from its inception in 1972. He loved the works of Thomas Merton and believed in peace and non-violence. This in turn led him to Pax Christi, a Catholic peace and justice movement. He was an active member and volunteer, attending conferences and keeping the work of nonviolence at the center of his life.

Jack also spent countless hours serving on boards that supported his children's endeavors. Boy Scouts, band parent, soccer league founder and coach, hockey parent, Indian Guides and Princesses, to name a few. Whatever his children pursued, he was there to support them. In their community of Thornburg, he served as a borough council member. Where there was a need, he was always willing to step in to fill it.

In 2003 he and Anne retired to Boynton Beach, FL. For twenty years he served at Saint Ann Hygiene Center for the Homeless. Many of the clients became his friends as he ministered to each with quiet dignity. As a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteer, he helped many low income workers file their taxes. Jack also served with Faith in Action and as a board member for his HIgh Point condo association. In between all the other volunteering, Jack also managed to find time to serve as the political chairman for the Loxahatchee Group of the Sierra Club. His spirit of generosity was felt by all.

Jack enjoyed visiting grandchildren and family, always ready for a celebration and some interesting storytelling. When not in Virginia, Louisiana or Montana visiting family, he could be found either reading or at a meeting (or zoom call) for a social justice program, men's spiritual work or a restorative justice issue. He was a gentleman who believed that if everyone did their part, we could someday realize the kingdom of God. As a man of deep faith, Jack bore witness to his life's purpose of being the "hands and feet of God".

Two of his passions were Big Sky Youth Empowerment Project and Floridians Against the Death Penalty (FADP) . If you would like to remember Jack with a memorial, please consider one of these organizations. A Celebration of Life will be held on June 15, 2024 in Yorktown, VA.
