SMITH, Leland Lloyd, passed away on May 14, 2016. Born in Syracuse, New York, in 1931 Leland spent the first half of life in Syracuse. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served during the Korean War. In 1971 he moved to Florida with his first wife Marion who predeceased him in 1988. He worked as an electrician for the State of Florida Department of Transportation for 20+ years until his retirement in 1992. He is survived by his wife Donna Smith (Fuller) whom he married in 1990. Two sons; Robert (Rita) of Syracuse, NY and Brian (Libby) of Doylestown, PA and four grandchildren Paul, Carey, Bryce and Reagan. A brother, Wesley and numerous nieces and nephews and his beloved cocker spaniel, Joshua. In retirement Leland developed a passion for U.S. history particularly the American Civil War. He co-founded the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Florida Chapter and was a member of the Palm Beach County Civil War Roundtable. Leland was also an original member of the Loxahatchee Battlefield Preservationists which is a 501C3 dedicated to the education and preservation of a major Seminole Battlefield. He garnered great joy in talking to young kids about the Civil War and sharing interesting stories and artifacts during school visits. He and Donna also traveled extensively visiting almost all 50 states and numerous international destinations. Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate his life at the Boynton Memorial Chapel, 800 W Boynton Beach Blvd, Boynton Beach on Wednesday, May 18th from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM His Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, May 19th at 10:00 AM.
