IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Lisette
Usborne
May 24, 1965 – June 6, 2021
Born on May 24, 1965, in Portsmouth, England, Lisette was the youngest of five children (André, Christopher, Michelle, Martine and Lisette). Early family holidays involved camping in the UK with Mum and Dad or, if lucky, a drive through France to a campsite in the sun. Lisette was always the first to 'have-a-go' and always took any opportunity that presented itself - often without any prior thought! She spent 10 days at sea as cook & deck hand on a yacht with André & a friend sailing from Portsmouth to Gibraltar when she was only 13! She had a go at luge tobogganing, skiing (which she hated) but was happiest in the water - snorkeling or diving.
Academically she was a very capable all-rounder excelling at languages, particularly Spanish. She graduated from school and visited Michelle in Dubai, where she hooked up with like-minded friends and followed them back to Los Angeles. Lisette loved life in America so much she never considered returning to the UK.
From LA she moved to San Diego where she ran a motel and then she moved onwards to Grand Cayman with her loving partner Tony, where she managed a holiday tour company. Lucien was born in Grand Cayman and, following their dreams, she & Tony returned to Lake Worth when she was heavily pregnant with René. Tragically, Tony was killed in a car accident before René was born.
Lisette subsequently dedicated her life to her children and worked tirelessly to give Lucien and René the very best start in life. Their formative years were spent at Dreyfoos School of the Arts where they excelled in flute and percussion. Zhané arriving 10 years ago completed her family.
Throughout her life Lisette made regular visits to the UK to see her Mum and was super proud of the fact that she never missed a family wedding (and there are a LOT of family!). She also loved travelling and took her family all over the world - including China, Thailand, Costa Rica, Panama, Dubai and Europe, to name just a few.
Diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer 7 years ago, Lisette faced this disease with absolutely typical character - acceptance, but with humour and dignity which, in itself, became an inspiration to so many of those who knew her. Typically, she ran a family competition to give her liver tumour a name - the winning entry of "Kraang" was from her nephew Mike who even received a t-shirt posted to the UK with the name printed on it…..!
Despite the circumstances, one of the passions developed after her diagnosis was dragon boating and the family of friends she made through the paddling community was truly amazing and, we think, completely changed the way she viewed her life at that time. In her own words: "I am most thankful for finding the dragonboat team Lighthouse Dragons where I have built a network of beautiful friends of the heart, such lovely and caring people, and a sisterhood of peers." The shared camaraderie helped her enormously throughout her difficult final journey and she loved every one of her fellow paddlers. She absolutely adored being the team song writer (and could compose songs at a whim) and was truly honoured to be chosen as the 'Warrior in Pink' for South Florida in 2021.
She will be so, so, missed by so many people but she will NEVER be forgotten.
The Celebration of Life will take place immediately following the service, at Lisette's home.
