Luis Angel Torres, 95, of Delray Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully, on July 1, 2026. Born on May 12, 1931 in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Luis was one of 5 siblings. Luis’s early life was marked by both hardship and resilience. After the passing of his father at age eight, he spent time in an orphanage before being reunited with his family. From his youth, he demonstrated both a strong work ethic and a passion for community — working as a caddie at Ramey Air Force Base, where he developed his lifelong love of golf, and later as a cashier and government office assistant, where his reliability opened the door to a career in banking.
Luis was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he earned placement in leadership school. After his service, he moved to New York City in 1955. There, he studied television technology at night while working at Citibank during the day, ultimately embarking on a successful career in international banking. Rising through the ranks with dedication and humility, Luis retired as Vice President in the International Private Banking sector, serving high-profile clients worldwide. He worked his entire career at Citibank.
In 1957, Luis married Sonia Marie Neco, beginning a 68+-year partnership filled with love, laughter, music, and dancing. Their shared passion for dance — from ballroom evenings at Tavern on the Green to Latin rhythms at the Taft Hotel — became a signature of their life together. Luis was not only a graceful dancer but also a fine singer, serving as a parish cantor and choir member at St. Thomas More Church in Boynton Beach, FL, where he faithfully sang psalms at Masses, weddings, and funerals. His devotion to his church and to bringing comfort to others was among his highest callings.
He was the consummate humanitarian. Service and community defined Luis’s life. He was an active member of People to People, hosting countless families in NJ, coordinated golf tournaments, volunteered weekly and served in the Board of the Caridad Center which became his nonprofit mission, and dedicated countless hours to St. Thomas More and its parish community. He lived by the mantra that one should “Aspire to Inspire before you Expire”. He certainly embodied that to the fullest.
Luis is survived by his loving wife Sonia, their two children, Diana L Lopez and her husband Robert Lopez, and Ricardo (Rick) D Torres, and his wife Karen Torres. He also delighted in the joy and shared selflessly of his love to his surviving grandchildren, Melinda, Emily (from Diana) and Shannon, Sean and Eric (from Ricardo) and his step-granddaughter, Jordan (from Karen) and great grandson Jacob all of whom Luis cherished deeply. Luis loved his family and was constantly reaching out to his siblings, caring deeply for their personal and extended family’s welfare.
To his friends and family, Luis was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, community servant, dancer, singer, and faithful friend. He believed his many blessings in life were gifts to be repaid through service, compassion, and joy. We will all miss him dearly.
A visitation will take place from 3:00pm-7:00pm on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at Boynton Memorial Chapel.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at Emmanuel Catholic Church at 10:30am on Thursday, July 16, 2026. Following the mass, Luis will be laid to rest at South Florida National Cemetery with Army honors at 12:30pm.
A celebration of Luis' life will continue at Caridad Center at 1:00pm following the burial.
In honor of Luis' life, the family asks that in lieu of flowers, you may consider making a donation to Caridad Center.
