Mary DiModica, born, Maria Gloria Simone, to Benedetta and Louis Simone on September 5, 1925.
She remembered distinctly walking into St. Peter and Paul in Brooklyn, at the age of 3, to be baptized. Her father insisted that his brother be the god parent, but he lived in Italy, so it took some time to get here.
She loved going to church and was a devout Catholic her entire life.
She was always the little worker bee in the family, and helped all of her aunts with their dozens of babies, and diapers, happily. Many of those younger cousins looking up to her as a mother figure in later years.
She met her husband Frank DiModica, who she called "Red" when she was only 11 years old, when he kicked sand in her face at the beach. By 15 she was already telling her best friend, her Aunt Cora, that she was going to marry my dad. They couldn't actually date for a few years, but they eventually did, and she waited and prayed for him to come home to her safely for three years, while he fought in Japan and battled not only the enemy, but malaria, and other accidents, always guided by her faith.
She worked in NYC during and after the war for various large corporations as a secretary and a bookkeeper.
She wanted to be a doctor as a young girl to help humanity, but was happy with being a great wife and mother. She would have liked to have a lot of children, but was not able to, but she never gave up hope.
She encouraged Frank to give raises to employees, extra bonuses and interest free mortgages for friends, family and employees--This after wearing one black dress that she made herself for almost a year, while trying to help Frank start his gas station business. Still she always practiced charity, and remembered that there were others who had less. She always encouraged helping with building projects at every church they attended.
When the secretary moved to Florida, Mary jumped in and worked in the office and still ran two households, one here in Florida and one in New York, flying across country monthly, but kept up the smile. She prided herself on never having any help with the housework, but couldn't always remember in which city she left her clothes.
She was best friends and inseparable with her daughter, Rosemary, and they spoke on the phone several times a day, always marveling that they could be in two different states, and cooking the exact same thing for dinner.
She always had the biggest smile and biggest heart and loved to have friends and family over to the house, both in NY and Florida and cook for sometimes 70 people with the help of her beloved sister Caroline, her mother Fanny, her niece Joanne and her daughter, and she did it all with a smile and dressed in glam holiday finest and high heels!
She loved her Italian-American heritage and the family trip to Italy.
She supported her husband during good and bad business years, good and bad health, bringing home cooked food daily to the hospital for weeks on end when he was ill.
She supported the City of Hope, the ASPCA and the Humane Society. She truly was saddened by the loss of both of her two beloved dogs, Muffin and Shanti, in the past year.
In the last year of her life she was in extreme pain, pain that really could not be controlled, and she just hunkered down and listened to numerous masses a day and prayed that the Lord would be kind to her.
A testimony to her beautiful life is the reactions of all of the people who learned of her passing.
Everyone said the same thing. She was such a good lady and we will sorely miss her beautiful smile.
Funeral Mass to be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, August 3, 2015 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church
