Maurice E. "Speed" Murphy, 86 of Boynton Beach, Fl passed away May 19th after a short illness. Maurice was born in Dorchester, Ma to Maurice A. and Marion (Minahan) Murphy. Maurice had been a long time resident of Lawrence, Ma and Salem, NH. until settling in Florida upon his retirement. He is survived by his wife Frances (LaPlante) with whom he shared 63 loving years, his children, David J. of Haverhill, Ma, Diane F. Desrochers and Edward T both of Boynton Beach, Maureen S. of Ft. Lauderdale, grandsons, Douglas, Derek and John, three great-grandsons, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends. He was predeceased by his brother, John R. Murphy of Philadelphia. Maurice graduated Lawrence High School, class of 1940. He enlisted in the Army in 1943 and his love of skiing led him to be accepted into the elite 10th Mountain Division. He served as SSgt and saw combat in the northern Italian mountains with men who would become his lifelong brothers in arms. For his service he received a number of medals and awards including the Soldiers Medal for "Exceptional Courage". In 1977, after 32 years of service, he retired from the U.S. Postal Service, as supervisor of letter carriers in Lawrence, Ma. Maurice enjoyed spending time with his family; he always had a good story or a joke to tell and loved a new audience. His past hobbies included skiing, golfing, bowling, photography and the latest technology. Speed's best friends were his books, his music and his dogs, Teddy, BoBo, and Darby. He was a current member of the VFW, American Legion and was also a founding member and past president of the Lawrencian Ski Club. He was also instrumental in the development in Junior League baseball in Lawrence and Salem. Maurice's greatest passion however was his involvement in the 10th Mountain Division Association where he held the position of National Quartermaster for several years. He enjoyed a special Esprit de Corps with his comrades of the 10th Mtn Div and attended innumerable conventions and trips across the USA and Italy. Sempre Avanti. A funeral mass will be celebrated in St. Joseph's Church, Salem NH Wednesday May 28th at 11:00 am. followed by burial with military honors at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Lawrence, Massachusetts with reception to follow.
