Private First Class Roy Searle of Graniteville, RI, entered the Army in October of 1942 and served in Company D, 1st Battalion, 357th Infantry Regiment, 90th Infantry Division in the European Theater during the Second World War. He was mortally wounded during enemy engagement on December 9, 1944 and was reported to have died of his wounds near Rehlingen, Germany. His remains were not identified during the war.
In 1946 to 1950 his remains and those of others were transferred from a civilian cemetery in Germany to the United States Military Cemetery St. Laurent, France, now the Normandy American Cemetery.
In June of 2021 the Department of Defense and American Battle Monuments Commission exhumed the remains which were then sent for testing. On September 27, 2022 the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced that U.S. Army PFC Roy J. Searle, 22, was accounted for.
At the time of his death, his survivors included his wife Gertrude A. Searle, his parents Harvey and Mabel Searle and his twin brother Raymond Searle (Madelyn).
Burial will be September 13, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at the South Florida National Cemetery, 6501 State Road 7, Lake Worth FL.
