IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Richard Thomas
Riguzzi
August 20, 1938 – February 20, 2021
Richard Riguzzi was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, and friend who was loved by all who knew him. He was a man of unfaltering integrity, curiosity, and deep devotion to family. He was born in 1938 in Silver Lake, NY (now West Harrison) to Evo Riguzzi, Sr and Concetta (Dolly) Sepa.
For over 70 years of Richard's life, home was Woodside Ave in West Harrison, NY. For a small town guy, he was a worldly man. In 1963, Richard joined the Harrison, NY Police force. Over the course of 32 years of service he held almost every position in the department including Lieutenant Detective and Captain/Deputy Chief. In the 1980s, he championed the department's computerization and ultimately managed the computer systems that revolutionized the department's ability to serve the public. He was instrumental in instituting the Westchester County 911 emergency system for the Town/Village of Harrison.
As a detective, Richard assisted countless investigations and worked to improve the department's investigation tactics and evidence management techniques. He led high-profile cases such as 1980 Stouffer's Inn Hotel fire where 26 people lost their lives and in solving the murder of two young women whose bodies were discovered in town. He was devoted to finding the truth and worked tirelessly and meticulously to reveal it.
From his youth, civic duty and volunteerism were driving forces in Richard's life. At 15, he became the second Eagle Scout in West Harrison, NY. After high school he volunteered for the Army and served in the 125th Infantry. Throughout his life, Richard was active in the Police Benevolent Association, Lion's Club, and the Columbians, an Italian-American police organization.
Above all, Richard was a loving and devoted family man. In 1960, he married the love of his life Mary Campisi. Their marriage thrived for 60 years in a partnership of love, friendship, understanding and trust that brought together two families into a bond that has lasted generations. Among Richard's family and friends, he will be remembered not just for the great man that he was, but also for the stories and jokes he shared, re-shared, and then shared again. It is a testament to his storytelling that we couldn't help but laugh each time, and no one more so than Mary, whose laughter always put a sparkle in Richard's eyes.
After retiring Richard and Mary settled in Boynton Beach where they enjoyed both old and new friendships.
Richard is survived by two daughters, Lisa Fabro and Laura Riguzzi. He was known and loved as "Ponnie" to his six grandchildren: Nick, Liana, Christopher, Elizabeth, Mary, and James. Richard is also survived by two loving brothers, Evo Riguzzi Jr, and David Riguzzi and his wife Anne, brother-in-law Frank Campisi and his wife Lea, and many loving nieces and nephews.
We will forever cherish the love and guidance he gave, the steadfast example of a life well led, a lifetime of memories, and the laughter.
