Sigrid Klara
Mertens
Apr 28, 1942 — May 24, 2026
Sigrid Klara Mertens, 84, of Boynton Beach, Florida, passed away on May 24, 2026.
Sigrid grew up during the War War II in Germany with her 3 younger brothers (Hans, Peter & Ralph) and was raised by a single Mom (Claire) who worked long hours in a laundromat to support her children. Sigrid married very young and moved to Texas with her husband (Horst) who had joined the US Army. They went on to have 4 children (Gigi, Mario, Sheila & Dominique) as they moved from TX to NYC to Canada where they settled down. When the marriage failed she never lost faith through the ensuing hardships of coping as a single mom and battling early onset Arthritis which was very debilitating. She found work as a bookkeeper in the garment industry and commuted 4 hrs daily - while still preparing fresh meals and caring for all the needs of her children. On one of Sigrid's many trips to the hospital she met Katherine and their lives became so woven together that Sigrid always referred to Katharine as her daughter. In later years Sigrid found the love of her life - Ronnie - and became stepmom to his two young sons (Steven & Peter). They had a sweetheart marriage and loved to spend time with each other and the family and pursued many interests, hobbies and crafts. They loved to travel to their trailer in Brockville (Canada) during the summer and Florida in the winter to see family - but mostly to be on the beach and enjoy the warm weather. They both loved to read and Sigrid was still requesting new library books days before she passed. When Ronnie passed suddenly in 2016, daily solo living became very difficult for Sigrid due to the debilitating physical limitations of the Arthritis and she spent several months each year at the hospital and rehab. She got Covid 19 during lockdown at a Rehab and by 2021 she was no longer able to return home. In the Fall of 2021 Sigrid made the decision to move to Florida to be with her children as her health continued failing. She touched the lives of all who knew her and was always gracious and kind and generous with everything she had. Her journey in life was very difficult and filled with continual daily pain but she walked in faith through all her hardships and was always ready with a smile even on her worst days. Our good byes were always "love you mom" and she always had the same response "love you more" - but today we will have the last word and say "love you more".
Sigrid ...Mother of 4 - Gigi, Mario, Sheila & Dominique; Stepmom of 2 - Steven & Peter; "Mother in Love" to Katharine; Grandmother of 5 - Leo, Tony, Tania, Claudia, Jade & Jesse; Great Grandmother of 6.
