IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William Joseph
Mannion
May 18, 1937 – May 1, 2025
William Joseph Mannion, 87, of Boynton Beach, Florida and formerly of New Fairfield,
Connecticut passed away peacefully on Thursday May 1, 2025. He was the husband of
Margaret (Peggy) Mannion and had been married for 61 years.
Born on May 18, 1937 in Barbersfort Tuam, County Galway, Ireland, he was the son of
John and Margaret Mannion and grew up working alongside his brothers and sisters on
the family farm. He led a life of love, faith and hard work and always tried to set a good
example. He was a steadfast and kind presence in the lives of his family and many
friends.
He left Ireland in 1961, bound for Australia - New York was to have been a stop along
the way (or so he thought). He was "claimed' (as he liked to put it) by his sister
Katherine (Kitty) and soon found a job at 25 Sutton Place South, along the East River in
midtown Manhattan. He met the love of his life, Peggy McHugh, at the City Center
Ballroom in Manhattan and they were married on April 4, 1964. By 1965 Bill had been
named Resident Manager of the Sutton Place building. Four children followed and that
apartment was the family home for the next 21 years. He also loved his "country house"
in New Fairfield, Connecticut where he would tend to his roses and gardens, dig
ditches, shovel gravel and build his dry stone walls.
Bill was active in the New York Building Manager's Association and later a founding
member of The Emerald Guild Association. He mentored many people along the way,
helping his employees and friends to move up the ranks and on to better things. He
would offer a job, an encouraging word and a helping hand to anyone who needed it.
He was a man of great faith and, although a proud son of Ireland, he really loved the
good old USA. He was quite patriotic and would never display the Irish flag without the
Stars and Stripes alongside. He loved to listen to his Irish tapes and sing along in the
car, go to Irish dances with Peggy and their many friends and play his accordion and
harmonica.
He was an optimist with the gift of gratitude. He believed in being happy with what he
had at any stage of life and that good things would come along.
Bill is survived by his loving wife Peggy, daughter Margaret (Lawrence) and sons John
(Maria), Noel (Samantha) and Paul (Rie) and grandchildren Megan, Erin, Jack,
Christopher, Rebecca, Matthew, Emily and James and two great-grandsons, Connor
and Nicholas.
